Wisconsin bicycle deaths caused by inattentive driving have occurred at an alarming rate this summer. Distracted and inattentive drivers are responsible for at least 6 deaths of bicylists since July 1 according to information compiled by the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. Most of the cyclist deaths appear to be caused by vehicles rear ending the bicycles. Cellphones, texting, and other inappropriate multi-tasking activities are distracting drivers from the serious business of paying attention to the road in front of them.
Drivers need to be reminded that they share the road with cyclists, and a moment of inattention can be deadly. A good summary of Wisconsin bicycle laws can be found at the website of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin. Other bicycle-auto safety information is available at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Let’s all do our part to make the roads safe for cyclists as well as motorists.
